Message from the Dean of
the Institute of Pure and Applied
Sciences

The Institute of Pure and Applied Sciences is an organization comprising members from diverse research fields, including mathematics, physics, chemistry, applied physics, and materials science, fostering a fusion of science and engineering. The University of Tsukuba is distinguished by its unique approach to the “separation of teaching and learning,” which entails separating faculty from educational organizations. This system allows faculty members of the Institute of Pure and Applied Sciences to engage flexibly in academic activities by affiliating with multiple educational organizations in various capacities while maintaining their primary membership within the Institute of Pure and Applied Sciences.

At our university, which prides itself on being a research institution, the primary duty of faculty members is research, with the overarching goal of our daily activities being the pursuit of new scientific discoveries, the generation of knowledge, and the creation of new values. The Institute of Pure and Applied Sciences, the organization to which our researchers belong, is dedicated to fostering a supportive research environment and enhancing the research capabilities of its faculty members who engage in a wide range of fields, from basic science to engineering, with applications that impact society. Their objectives, motivations, and goals are diverse, reflecting the multifaceted nature of their research topics which range from foundational work that underpins modern science and technology to cutting-edge technological advancements. Research styles also vary widely, encompassing individual endeavors, large-scale organizational projects, and focused activities as part of centers with specific goals. In addition, Tsukuba City hosts several prominent research institutions, including the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, the National Institute for Materials Science, and the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization. Recognizing the importance of collaboration, we place a strong emphasis on conducting research in partnership with these research institutions.

For university personnel, educational activities aimed at human resource development are as vital as research. We provide a platform for education led by top researchers, organized within a framework of mathematics and materials science. Our efforts focus on training the next generation of researchers who will advance these research outcomes and developing highly skilled professionals who will apply these results in society. To achieve this, we offer a diverse range of educational opportunities, from undergraduate and graduate education to programs for working professionals. We also support each participant by utilizing the unique “separation of teaching and learning” approach that characterizes our university.

International collaboration is a prerequisite for modern scientific research, and all activities of the Institute of Pure and Applied Sciences are designed to achieve global recognition. Furthermore, we are committed to ensuring diversity among the members of the Institute of Pure and Applied Sciences.
